Chichen Itza 2

Most went into the site this morning, avoiding the tourist hordes from Cancun for at least the first hour. After, we all went to Ik Kill Cenote for a swim and lunch. The buffet lunch was great, the Cenote, not so much. So many tourists, you could hardly see the water at times. It's hard to avoid stuff like this, so close to Cancun. European men in speedos (most speaking German) and 300 lb women in string bikinis. Not a pleasant sight. Mind you there were a few nice looking young girls in string bikinis as well, but I was glad my wife was not there to cover my eyes. I tried to focus on them. I do have to wonder about the water quality with dozens of tour buses discharging 100's of sweating, peeing, tourists into that water. I certainly avoided swallowing any. You had to wait 10 minutes to even get into the water, the  crowds were so thick. And this is not even high season. We are going into Xcaret at the next stop, but we all know that is a commercial theme park type thing and are prepared to view it as such.

I think we need to find an alternative, and that is what bernie & i tried to do this afternoon. We went off exploring. We found 2 Cenotes, a similar one to Ik Kill,  20 km away and a subteraenean one 40 km away, both of which are far better and just as accesible to mobility impaired customers. The pictures below show Ik Kill followed by 2 photos of the one 20 km away. That one also has a zip line. They provide life jackets for free whereas Ik Kill charges you 100 pesos for one. It is also a local cooperative that runs it, not a corporation, and that is important to a lot of customers. The water clarity was noteably better than at Ik Kill. I think we should shift to that, and do the buffet lunch across the street from where we are parked. It looks just as good as the one in Ik Kill. A bit cheaper which offsets the cost of transporting people the extra 10 km. No that we worry about that sort of thing, but if we can provide better, at the same cost, why not?
