Today we went over to Cuastecomates, a small village about 3 km from Melaque on a small sheltered bay. This is the first town in North America catering mainly to the physically handicapped. 7/8 of the parking spots are for the handicapped only. They were starting the transformation last year but I was not sure what was going on. Now the streets have been paved and yellow lines indicate where you can take a wheelchair. Those lines are slight raised so a blind person can follow them with a cane and regular braille signs along the way indicate where they are going. It is almost impossible to find parking unless you are handicapped, but fortunateley we have the sticker. The beach is now fully handicapped accessible with a wooden boardwalk and special carts (see picture) to get those in wheelchairs in the water. All the signs are in braille. This town only has a few hundred people. There are some very expensive looking homes on the hillside just above it and the ocean here is dead calm. There are a couple of small hotels plus the sizable La Quinta Gran Bahia. 5 years ago this hotel was run down and largely abandoned, now it has been refurbished into a 4.5 star all inclusive. (handicapped accessible of course)
Wonderful to hear about this place and nice pics.
